Dorcas Román
Dorcas Román is a dancer, choreographer and actress native to Puerto Rico. She received her BA in theater from the University of Puerto Rico and an MFA in choreography and performance from the UCLA Dance Department. Román has been active in dance and theater for over 17 years teaching, dancing, and choreographing. From the stage at Walt Disney Concert Hall to the floors of Gallery Avenue 50, Roman’s choreography has been presented in exciting and diverse venues in and outside of the United States. Her choreography has travelled to thrilling places such as San Juan, Salt Lake City, Sao Paulo and Brasilia. In Brasilia she danced, choreographed, judged and taught at the International dance festival of Brasilia for five consecutive years. She was commissioned to create dances for the Escola Paolista de Dança in Sao Paulo. In LA MYE theatre company she was nominated for an Ovation award for the work Cloudcuuckooland which featured Roman’s choreography. Roman has work and collaborated with artist such as: Ron Brown, Guiillermo Gomez- Peña, Poli Marichal, Merian Soto and Collage Dance Theater among others.
Dorcas Roman is the artistic director of Dorcas Román Dance-Theatre based in Los Angeles, California. The company employs and incorporates Contact Improvisation, Release, Dance-Theatre, Latin Jazz, Flamenco, West African dance as well as Horton Technique in their work. Román has been the recipient of various awards such as the distinguished emerging choreographer award from the Institute of Culture of Puerto Rico, and as part of Collage Dance Theatre, a Lester Horton Award for Outstanding Achievement in Performance for the production of “Most Wanted.” Some of her most recent works include “Perception”, an evening performance commissioned as part of the art exhibit Beautiful Deceptions at Avenue 50. Her work I-Solations was part of the CSULB faculty concert Groundswell. DRDT full-length concert, Bohemian Nights, premiered at the Martha B. Knoebel in Fall 2008. DRDT presented their work at The Praxis Project, Mix Match Dance Festival and DanceSpot in 2009 and 2010. DRDT latest full=length evening work “Assimilations” premiered at Highways Performance Space during the spring 2010. Most recently DRDT participated in the Maraton de Danza de Madrid, Spain. DRDT has been touring with her company across the US in festivals in Chicago, Houston, New York and Los Angeles. Dorcas Roman has taught dance at CSULB since 2003.
